Why are only medical surgical masks and N95 protective masks useful?

First of all, I believe everyone should have been very clear these days. Cotton masks, paper masks, activated carbon masks, sponge masks, etc. have almost no effect in the face of the onset of diseases (activated carbon can only remove odors, and can not do the adsorption of germs as you imagined. ). The official recommendation is only medical surgical masks and N95 series protective masks.

When you cut the medical surgical mask, you can find that there are three layers, and the functions of the three layers are different. The core principle is to filter out germs. Inside is a moisture-absorbing layer, which can absorb the moisture exhaled by the overlapped person.

From this point of view, this kind of medical mask must not be worn backwards, otherwise if the inner layer faces outward, it will easily attract external droplets to absorb and penetrate.

According to the national standard of YY 0469-2011 for medical surgical masks, the bacterial filtration efficiency of medical surgical masks should be greater than or equal to 95%; its synthetic blood penetration capacity should be waterproof to prevent blood penetration under 120mmHg pressure; but at the same time, the use of surgical For special use environments, the particle filtration efficiency of medical surgical masks is only required to be no less than 30%.

According to ordinary disposable medical masks, according to the national YY/T 0969-2013 standard for disposable medical masks, only the bacterial filtration efficiency BFE is greater than or equal to 95% (this point is the same as medical surgical masks), but in terms of water resistance and particles There is no requirement on standards such as filtration efficiency PFE.

In view of the fact that the transmission of the new coronavirus is mainly droplet transmission and contact transmission, it has not been determined whether it can be transmitted through aerosols. Therefore, medical surgical masks have obviously played a role.

Let's talk about N95 protective masks. "N95" is a grade of protective masks that meets the standards of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health of the United States.

Matching "KN95" that meets China's GB 2626-2006 respiratory protective equipment, self-priming filter anti-particulate respirator standard. Of course, everyone should know a lot about this, so I wont go into it too much.

There are 9 types of NIOSH certified particulate protective masks: three types of N series (N95, N99, N100); three types of R series.

(R95, R99, R100); Three types of P series (P95, P99, P100). N series are not oil-resistant, R series have-fixed oil resistance, performance, P series strong oil resistance. The number behind indicates the percentage of oily/non-oily particles that can be blocked.

It can be seen that in fact, N95 can be said to be the lowest standard among these nine. Oil resistance is mainly required by certain industrial environments, but for protection against smog, PM2.5, and bioaerosols, N95 is sufficient.
