Uses of FFP masks

There are many standards for masks, such as domestic standards, American standards and European standards. This article mainly introduces European standard masks. I believe many of my friends don't understand it well. Let's take a look!

FFP masks refer to masks that meet the European (CEEN1409:2001) standards. The European standards for protective masks are divided into three levels: FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3. The difference from the American standard is that its detection flow rate adopts 95L/min, and DOP oil is used to generate dust.

  1. Individual protection products designed to prevent or reduce dust in the air from entering the human respiratory organs to protect life safety;

  2. Material: Anti-particle masks are mostly constructed with two layers of non-woven fabric inside and outside, and a filter cloth (melt blown cloth) in the middle layer;

  3. Filtering principle: Filtering fine dust is mainly based on the filter cloth in the middle. Because the melt blown cloth has the characteristics of static electricity, it can absorb positively small particles. Since the fine dust is adsorbed on the original filter, and the original filter cannot be washed with static electricity, the self-priming filter anti-particulate respirator needs to replace the original filter regularly

  4. Remarks: The international requirements for the use of anti-particulate masks are quite strict. The anti-particulate masks belong to the first level in personal protective equipment, which is higher than earmuffs and protective glasses. The more authoritative testing certifications include CE certification in Europe and NIOSH certification in the United States, while Chinese standards are similar to NIOSH in the United States.

  5. Protection objects: The protection objects are divided into KP and KN. The so-called KP is capable of protecting oily and non-oily particles, while KN is only capable of protecting non-oily particles.

  6. Protection level: China’s protection level is divided into KP100, KP95, KP90 and KN100, KN95, KN90. Among them, KP100 and KN100 have the highest national standard requirements for filtration efficiency greater than 99.97%, so the safety of use is also the highest.

Filter material

Different FFP2 masks use different filter materials. On the one hand, the filtering effect is related to the particle size of the particles, but also affected by whether the particles contain oil. FFP2 masks are usually classified according to filtration efficiency and whether they are suitable for filtering oily particles. Oil-free particles such as dust, water-based mist, paint mist, oil-free fumes (welding fumes), microorganisms, etc. Although the filter materials of "non-oily particulate matter" are more common, they are not suitable for oily particulate matter, such as oil mist, oil fume, pitch fume, coke oven fume, etc. The filter material suitable for oily particles can also be used for non-oily particles.
